Sugar Free Cereal: Fact or Fiction?

Is there really such a thing as a sugar free cereal or do they all contain sugar?

There certainly are foods that don’t contain any sugar and if you make a breakfast cereal using those types of ingredients then, yes, you can have cereal that is free from sugar but the problem lies with knowing which ones don’t have sugar in them and are they still going to taste good.

The question of whether these cereals will taste good to you if they don’t have sugar in them is going to be purely down to a matter of personal taste preferences. If you’re used to eating foods that are sweet in taste then you may decide that any cereals that don’t have sugar won’t taste nice.

Golden Rules For Choosing Healthy Breakfast Cereals

There are some simple rules to follow when choosing a sugar free or low sugar cereal;

  • Choose cereals that contain at least 5 grams of fiber per serving
  • Choose cereals that contain less than 5 grams of sugar per serving
  • Choose cereals that contain at least 3 grams of protein
  • Choose cereals that have the main ingredient listed as; ‘Whole wheat’ or ‘Wheat bran’
  • Avoid cereals that list hydrogenated oils, artificial colors or preservatives as ingredients

Notice how there is no mention of ? This is because when you follow the above listed rules you don’t need to look at the calorie content because foods that are low in sugar are also low in calories. This is another added benefit of following a sugar free diet, you no longer have to count, or worry, about calories.

Post Spoon Sized Shredded Wheat fits the requirement of all the above listed rules as a 1 cup serving contains; 6 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein and 0 grams of sugar.

Kellogg’s Unfrosted Mini Wheat Bites are a close second as they contain the same amount of fiber and protein as the above cereal along with just 1 gram of sugar.
